Lou Gehrig

Lou Gehrig was born in 1903, in New York City. Lou was the one of his parents four children to survive. His mom Christina had to work hard because his father had trouble with finding a job and with poor health. Lou's mother Christina was very adamant about Lou getting an education. In 1921 Lou went to Columbia on a football scholarship to pursue a degree in engineering. During college New York Giants manager John McGraw convinced Lou to play illegal summer baseball and after this Lou was banished from intecollegiate sports for the rest of his freshman year. Lou played football for Columbia in 1922 but in 1923 he switched to baseball and whar a New York Yankee's scout saw him play Gehrig was signed by the New York Yankees with a signing bonus of $1,500. In Gehrig's first 26 major league at bats he hit with an average of .426. Gehrig played for the Yankees for thirteen years without missing one game, playing in 2,130 consecutive games. After Gehrig's retirement the doctors found 17 fractures that had "healed" while he continued to play. In 1938, Gehrig's average fell below .300 for the first time since 1925. After playing eight games in the 1939 season Lou realized he was not well enough to play and retired. The December of 1939 Lou, due to his productive career, was inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame. He was then diagnosed with a degenerative type of cancer called ALS later known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Lou Gehrig died from ALS in 1941.

"Grampa seemed to be struggling; all his muscles twitched. And suddenly he jarred as though under a heavy blow"

--Grapes of Wrath
